Yehuda Amichai

Translation from Hebrew  by Alexander Barash

Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) is the greatest Israeli poet of the second half of the 20th century, winner of numerous national and international awards. As noted by researchers of his work, Yehuda Amichai is the most translated Hebrew poet after King David. His poems are about war, love, God, childhood, time, and all of this looks like a personal diary, with universal themes close to any reader. In Amichai’s poetry, colloquial Hebrew and a biblical layer of associations, events of personal history and global historical upheavals coexist. In one of his interviews, Amichai said: “My concern was to sort out, to separate love from war. My head was occupied with love, and history at that time was full of dangers, news of murders, news of the Holocaust. This is what I put into my poems.” The compiler and translator of the book of selected poems by Yehuda Amichai is the famous Russian poet Alexander Barash, who has lived in Jerusalem since 1989.
